Ceci n’est pas un carré – IM sketch

What can I say really? A video sketch involving everyday squares isn’t exactly an exciting prospect, but that mundaneness somehow turns this piece into something I can laugh at. Not taking these sketches seriously is probably the most important thing to keep in mind. I’ll admit this one is my favourite. Some background on the title here (gotta love Magritte). Think about it.

Bokeh Squared – IM sketch

I remember reading about bokeh manipulation but never tried it out – until now. I was running out of interesting square things so making my own seemed the best solution. I cut out a small square in the centre of a circle of paper, then cut the edges at intervals to create folds, and secured it over the lens with a rubber band. Square was too big the first time but the second attempt was just right. You can lose a lot of light with this technique as the end of the video shows. There’s something about moulding light into squares that makes you feel like you have superpowers… maybe it’s just me.

Square One – Integrated Media sketch

This was a very literal interpretation of the constraint. There’s something very flat but direct about a side-on tracking shot. A little Wes Anderson. The clock from a previous sketch makes a cameo here too. #clockhoggingthespotlightagain

O’clock – IM sketch

The second round-themed sketch.

This was the first idea that came into my mind when the task was presented to us. We occasionally think of cyclical time or loops, mostly in sci-fi, but at a more literal level, the hands of the clock go round with time. Of course, time doesn’t stop, but your watch does.

Round One – Integrated Media sketch tasks

The first from a series of sketches for my Integrated Media course at RMIT.

I had a bounce/reflector lying around and it was round, so, needing to document round things for this week’s task, it seemed appropriate, and mildly dynamic (that may be an oxymoron).
